In this blog, we tackle a common mistake that even professionals make – forgetting to finish the door.

A mistake we see all the time, especially on strata jobs, is water damage to doors. Before they’re hung, doors should be primed at the top and bottom, especially if they’re being used for wet areas. Doors are often MDF lined with cheap, light material on the inside (to keep them light). But if you don’t prime, water can seep up from the floor and rot away the lining. Over time, you will literally be able to pull the MDF away from the door.

Can it be fixed?

Yes, but it takes a lot of time and effort. You will need to cut out the rot, use builder’s bog or a similar product to fill up the gaps, sand this back, then apply two lots of undercoat and two lots of top coat to get it looking good as new.

How to avoid this?

Prime! Make sure the top and bottom of all your doors are primed before they are painted, especially if they’re going to be used in wet areas.

Or, skip the DIY and get Dope Deco in to do the job for you!
